Spacer North Carolina's Long Civil Rights Movement

On August 21, 1939, five African-American men recruited and trained by African-American attorney Samuel Wilbert Tucker conduct a sit-in at the then-segregated Alexandria, Virginia, library and are arrested after being refused library cards.

Though the Civil Rights Movement is often framed by events of the 1950s and 1960s, the struggle for political and social rights for African Americans actually stretches back nearly 150 years. North Carolinians were involved in the movement at the local, state, and national level from the end of the Civil War into the 1970s.
